Hi, I’m calamityjane. This is my studio.
Atelier: Large room with high ceiling. Big table for working flat or drawing. Unfancy easel that can be moved easily. The room opens onto a terrace allowing natural light in. Next to laundry area with a sink that can be dirtied with paint and brush cleaning. House: Charming home with 4-½ meter high ceilings from 1904. It’s BIG: 300 sq. m. / 3000 sq. f. covered, plus 100 sq. m. / 1000 sq. f. uncovered. Like the gentrification project of the “Marvelous Port” our house is still only half renovated. One half is freshly renovated and pristine, the other clearly still shows its age. The appliances on the other hand aren’t from 1904. If you’re searching for a very spacious, charming, bohemian and centrally located house with a painting atelier, this is a great choice. The space Our charming home with 4-½ meter high ceilings was built around 1904. It’s BIG: 300 sq. m. / 3000 sq. f. covered, plus 100 sq. m. / 1000 sq. f. uncovered. Covered: Four bedrooms (two with a king-size futon, two with queen-size futons), three bathrooms and an outside warm water shower, an inner living room to watch movies, two offices, an artist's painting studio, a kitchen, a laundry room, and a space to park bicycles. Best of all, a big covered outside living space with a spiral staircase. Uncovered: A swimming pool, a terrace, and a lawn with a hammock and a colorful Italian light chain. Ideal to do your yoga under the stars or practice your badminton, volleyball or tennis. Like the gentrification project of the “Marvelous Port” our house is still only half renovated. One half is freshly renovated and pristine, the other clearly still shows its age. The appliances on the other hand aren’t from 1904. There is a washer/dryer, a dishwasher, a brand new stove, a huge fridge, a Sony 55-inch HD LED TV and some designer furniture (oval eating table, red velvet couch, etc.). The infrastructure (stabilized electricity, gas, filtered water, internet, etc.) are all new. As host of the World Cup and the Olympics the city started pumping billions into this area to bring it back to its old splendor (Like Manhattan’s South Street Seaport, Puerto Madero of Buenos Aires, or Port Vell of Barcelona). But like most Brazilian projects, things got halted by the economic crisis… the gentrification is therefore still somewhat embryonic. Our street remains rough, but it isn’t dangerous. (We moved to Gamboa six years ago, ran a hostel during the World Cup and never had one incident. Something most people living in Copacabana or Santa Teresa unfortunately can’t claim.) If you are looking to stay at a proper, bourgeois place, this isn’t really for you. But if you’re searching for a very spacious, charming, bohemian and centrally located house, this is a great choice. In walking distance from Cidade do Samba, Pedra do Sal, Trapiche da Gamboa, the MAR Museum, Museo de Amanhã on Praça Maua and the Port with its promenade. 10 minutes by bicycle to the Center, Lapa, the national airport, the main bus terminal and the main train station. Close to the Sambadrome and the Maracanã stadium. Our port area is full of history and music: There are two UNESCO-recognized sites: the recently unearthed Valongo pier where a good part of the millions of slaves that were shipped to Brazil disembarked, as well as the slave cemetery, discovered underneath a private house. Samba was born here! No surprise that there is many a neighborhood bar with beer drinking folks and Brazilian music, clubs, open air forró and samba performances filling the streets. Truly a hidden gem, Gamboa is the most up and coming neighborhood that Rio has to offer.
